Water company gets solution from SAP - Wikimedia Commons

British satirical magazine Private Eye has mercilessly ragged the use by companies of the word "solution" to apply to all sorts of things that aren't solutions at all.

But a press release from German software giant SAP today really takes the biscuit. The water biscuit, obviously.

Headlined "SAP to deliver software solution to American Water" it summons up the idea of something like a kind of deadly contamination of drinking water with a solution that contains software.

Further, says SAP: "The software solution will be implemented companywide to link operations on a common platform and will help the company meet current and future business requirements."

Robert Enslin, president of SAP North America,  doesn't help clarify these muddy waters. "American Water joins legions of customers gaining business value from SAP's expertise in our solution set for utilities."
