But talking to analysts, Martiz said that while his company expected increased competition from rival vendors in the cloud and particularly virtualisation markets, it was not going to come from OpenStack.
According to IT News he said that OpenStack compares to the vSphere environment, it is still relatively immature and VMWare's greater challenge would probably come from Microsoft. However he did not say what it was in Microsoft's cloud or virtualisation strategies that would come as a threat to VMware's own.
VMware took on Cloud Foundry, and recently announced that eBay subsidiary X.commerce was going to use the service.
But Maritz added that OpenStack could become a formidable competitor in the future.
