An appeal by Microsoft against a $290 million infringement of patent ruling granted to Canadian company i4i has come to nought.
The Supreme Court rejected an appeal Microsoft made against a ruling it had breached a patent by using elements of i4i technology in its popular software program, Microsoft Word.
A jury had ruled in 2007 that Word used i4i technology but Microsoft had claimed that its claims were invalid.
Microsoft has received some support against so-called patent trolls, but will now have to cough up the money to the Toronto based company.
