Updates to this story
Software colossus Microsoft, which is so big sometimes it can't find its own bottom, has been having a few problems with its Hotmail system again.
Redmond has been rolling some new technology on its free webmail site, but users have been complaining like crazy.
But the clever people at Microsoft have worked out that the best way forward is to use the rival Chrome browser.
Skimming our way through the complaints on the Hotmail forum it appears that the new Hotmail has a few scripting errors which stop users from writing emails. Of course there are those who can't get into their accounts at all and all it will take is another Watt Tylor and there will be a few Microsoft castle's burnt.
But it seems that the brilliant programmers have spotted the cause of the problem. It is that Hotmail no longer supports some browsers.
In particular, that nasty Safari 3 and Firefox 2. Redmond seemed to think its own browsers were okish, as was Firebadger 3, and the rubber band powered Safari 4 was ok but if you really wanted to be sure Chrome on Windows was the best.
"Some customers have indicated that if they use Google Chrome to view their Hotmail account they no longer encounter this problem," said a Microsoft person on the blogs.
The users are still restless. Some have threatened to abandon Hotmail completely after the revamp because Microsoft is not taking them seriously.
But it is always like that with users. You can't live without them and can't shoot them.
And, no, they don't have to take the users seriously. Why would they start now? They'll just have to continue to settle for borking user's PC's instead of shooting them. EULA anyone?
The new upgrade is a disaster, the Hotmail forums have been locked by moderators
to prevent more people airing their greivences, thousands upon thousands of complaints
without any proper response or help from hotmail.
I tried sending some photographs from my netbook to my desktop via hotmail to allow me
to store them on my deskktop which has more space.
They won`t open properly and when I try and save them to my pictures they have been resized
smaller.
I have used three different browsers IE 8, Firefox and Opera, all the same results.
When I used to retrieve email headers before the upgrade I right clicked the title of the email, then clicked properties
and the email looked like this.

Who is actually benefitting from this new upgrade because it certainly isn`t the users.
Even the spellcheck does not work.
Hotmail have made a massive mistake and they will lose customers who will leave to use an easier email provider.
They will lose revenue from advertisers who will realise that people are leaving or cannot use the product.
Its time someone at the top at Hotmail held their hand up and admitted the upgrade is a failure and change it back to as it was,
virtually problem free.
Hotmail has been critiscised on many occasions when they have "upgraded" but this time it is the pits to say the least!
Why mend it when it is not broken?
Microsoft, please give us our faithful old friend back! You can add some features if you want but please leave the good things such as the downloading of photos etc
What a crock. 10 years of using the same e-mail and they cant keep it going
Any useful tips from those who HAVE logged in would be great.
stops working. I switch to Crome and it works fine. You mean to tell me MS can't even get it right with thier own
browser and the spell checker does not work.
Years ago, I have seen a lot of people started switching to gmail because of the many issues with hotmail. I thought Microsoft has the best customer service, but this time why can't they solve such simple issues. And to recommend a rival company is like taking suicide. It's not intentional, is it?
Right now I'm still using both gmail and hotmail, but between the 2, I find gmail better. for some reasons I can't just leave my hotmail though, so everytime it's acting up I do the usual tasks such as clearing cache, refreshing the page, rebooting the router, running a virus scan and sometimes even upgrading my browser--they can all be found here. http://windowsfix.org/how-to-fix-hotmail-problems.html
But it's really inconvenient... :(
