Linux Foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin has decided that he has won the war against Microsoft and his sending his troops home.
In a somewhat strange interview with Network World, Zemlin claims that Linux has wiped Microsoft off the map on everywhere other than the desktop.
Linux has outpaced Microsoft in nearly every market, including server-side computing and mobile, Zemlin claims.
He said that he didn't care about Microsoft these days. It used to be Linux's big rival, but now it's kind of like kicking a puppy.
Zemlin pointed out that while Microsoft's stock has stagnated over the past decade, Red Hat has soared, Zemlin notes. "Linux software is everywhere, and is something that runs 70 percent of global equity trading, something that powers, really, the majority of internet traffic, whether it's Facebook, Google or Amazon."
He said that Linux can be found in consumer electronics devices, like Sony televisions and camcorders, the Amazon Kindle, and in smartphones and tablets as part of Google's Android. Linux leads the market from the tiniest embedded systems to the largest supercomputers, with more than 90 percent of the Top 500 supercomputing sites in the world running Linux, it is boasted.
The only place where Windows dominates is the desktop where it has 90 percent of the market.
But Zemlin said that the "the good news is the traditional PC desktop is becoming less important". They are being replaced by gear like smartphones and tablets where Linux is very strong, he said.
The mobile market is being powered by the Linux based Android. A new contender might be HP's webOS which also uses Linux.
Zemlin admits that there are still a few problems for Linux to deal with. Patent lawsuits and legal uncertainty might prevent some people from adopting open source. Then there is the question as to why Linux could never build desktop share.
Zemlin blames anti competitive action from the Vole, but it is more likely that open source developers could not hide their contempt for non-technical users long enough to develop something worthwhile.
Linux on the desktop does not win because there was no big marketing campaign and because it is missing game support. Both issues are fixed on the mobile platforms: Traditional games are not expected, and companies pour in marketing money.
On the desktop Microsoft has already managed to turn the hardware creators into servitors of the software. Everywhere else, the hardware makers choose the OS, and it’s using Linux.
It was more open source developers did not see themselves has having a hope in hell. In the desktop market.
Number 2 desktop market really employees very few developers. Now that desktop market looks like a chance. Wayland and other key techs desktop requires are being developed.
Yes by the time we get them the desktop market might a very small segment.
Then they will lead the smartphone domain & others (Android etc) will watch
It's a big company, with very deep pockets, they put so much money in the XBOX product that they managed to grab a very big chunck of console market. They can throw away vast amounts of money and aren't shy about that.
But it will be hard for MS enter the Phone OS market. They don't have the market penetration of windows or a very desirable set of software (DirectX and Office). They have nothing, even less than when they created the XBOX, at least they got DirectX experience for that product.
Now they effectively bought all Nokia IP for a bargain. They licensed ARM designs. They are up to a phone, a MS made phone. Will it be any good? I doubt it will be bad, like the Kin phone. MS is betting their future on it. I already can see, a lot of directX games running straight from you phone, making a very good rival to the nintendo 3DS and next generation PSP, if the price is right (the iphone isn't).
Linux, in the form of Android, is going to need a lot of development to keep up.
Despite the respect due to the writer, I disagree.
Linux has gain many battles, but not the war.
I think now Microsoft, original or counterfeited, has 95% of the desktops, only because the most of the people have not yet been presented to Linux.
Furthermore, there are many other powerful developers of proprietary software hungry for market places.
I don't have a so great rivalry toward Microsoft, I even use it in my work, that which has a not so little network, in which Microsoft has a considerable part.
Nevertheless, Linux is the best in the desktop, in the server, or in the mobile, even its philosophy is attractive.
Then they will lead the smartphone domain & others (Android etc) will watch

This is funny... they are behind because their mobile offerings sucked... and now no one who has a clue will try the new one.
If we target the non gamers its only a matter of time and we can get serious market penetration. People are starting to listen and there are more every day who know the word linux. THIS IS DOABLE.....
Lastly my real concern for the future is virus.. with Android market share taking off its only a matter of time before we see real in the wild virus for linux now. Dont beleive that just cos root is protected that virus are not a problem for linux who cares if root is ok when you lose all your contacts list and other PI from your /home.. When Android is attacked its the beginning of a turn for the worse for all linux users and we will all have to get off our high horse and start taking security a bit more seriously than just saying linux is OK so I dont need to worry... more work is needed in the area even if we linux users are inherently more secure (but not 100%).
Wow, this sentence truly redefines the term "relevant".
Microsoft has even gained market share, so i really don't see them being finished.Quite the opposite there are already pepping up the mobile section while their singularity project isn't far from being released. On the Linux side we have the subvert acquisition of Novell, then the netbook disaster and even windows vista was only a minor blip in terms of marketshare. Strictly speaking Microsoft has managed to make Linux consistently look like a fool without breaking a sweat and they will continue doing so probably for years to come .
