A report from Symantec has identified the top 10 riskiest cities in the USA for cybercrime.
And Seattle, home to Microsoft, is top of the list.
The company came to its results by using its own data and independent research firm Sperl Bestplaces to come to its conclusions.
Here are the top 10:
- Seattle
- Boston
- Washington DC
- San Francisco
- Raleigh
- Atlanta
- Minneapolis
- Denver
- Austin
- Portland
Seattle is top, according to the report, for cyberattacks and potential infections and online behaviour that can lead to cybercrime, like online shops, online banks and wi-fi.
As Symantec rather disingenuously points out, many of the cities are considered the most tech-savvy cities in the USA.
Marian Merritt (pictured), a Symantec employee in charge of internet safety, said Detroit was the least risky online city. El Paso and Memphis also aren't very risky. But these cities also don't have fantastic access to the internet, and don't spend much on computer kit, she said.
Needless to say, Symantec has an agenda here. It wants you to buy Norton 360 so you're safe, and it's making money out of insecurity, even if you live in Seattle or Boston.
Perhaps a hacker broke through Symantec security and turn the list upside-down, so Portland is the most risky city in the world. Norton wouldn't stop him at all.
Our small office went the Mac route two years ago and last year I finally moved our whole family to Linux. (Mandriva to be precise using the KDE desktop which more Win user friendly)
Our two desktops and three laptops
Everything was recognized with no driver needed; my Canon digital camera, my Brother printer, mp3 player, scanner, tablet, wireless mouse and multilingual keyboard, expensive headset mic and logitech webcam for the Skyping of course.
Life has moved on both a work and at home without Windows.
Ive now become rather adept after almost 18months with Linux and Ive installed it on my parents two computers, my inlaws and 2 aunts over Xmas.... all these people areretired for over a decade.
No more song and dance. No more worrying if they are going to open an attachment.
Peace of mind.
And the best part...
its free.
not a penny and every 6months i get a brand new OS. And ive even given new life to some old hardware (P4, Celeron and Thinkpad w- P3-800)
with some less demanding desktops.
I tried Linux every few years but even 2-3 years ago it was usable but not there yet. It now is.
This isnt one of those 'My OS rules...your sucks' post.
I have bought every Microsoft version from DOS to XP (well, not ME but then again, no one even remembers it).
Ive done the dance as long and as well as most. i even worked in a small computer store during my college days, so im not a total spazz with computers.
But I just had enough.
Like being in an abusive relationship for over two decades, I turned my back and havent looked back since.
Life without Windows whether Mac or Linux is well worth living because the peace of mind is priceless.
Norton, AVG, NOD, Ad-Aware and all... i wont miss you.
If I come across as someone pimping an option over an other, im not. All Im saying is you have at least two other choices instead of Windows and its whole culture of insecurity.
Maybe its time to look into them.
