NASA, GM create Robonaut 2 -

NASA said that it and General Motors have created the next iteration of their robot, Robonaut 2 (R2). R2 is a development of the original Robonaut, created 10 years ago, and includes better functionality.

R2 has been designed to work safely with people and features leading edge control, sensor and vision technologies. The robot was built with the help of engineers from Oceaneering Space Systems of Houston and created under a Space Act Agreement.

It can lift and hold 20 pound weights both near and away from its body

NASA's Johnson centre director Mike Coats said: "Our challenge today is to build machines that can help humans work and explore in space. Working side by side with humans, or going where the risks are too great for people, machines like Robonaut will expand our capability for construction and discovery."

There's obviously a spin off for General Motors too, as the R2 is designed to use the same tools as humans.
