Heart scientists invent high-res photographic technique -

Scientists at the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council at the University of Oxford calim to have invented a photographic technique that will revolutionise photography.

The technology is based on off-the-shelf standard cameras and digital movie projectors and developed by Dr Peter Kohl and his team to further their studies of the human heart.

The scientists claim to have developed a tool that can provide high speed video with high res still images from the same camera and suitable for consumer, scientific, and industry applications.

Dr Kohl said that anyone trying to take video or photos of a high speed scene, even with a decent SLR camera, know it's hard to capture a sharp image as the movement causes blurring. "Dr Gil Pub from my team came up with a really great idea to bring together high resolution still images and high speed video footage, at the same time and on the same camera chip".

He said that the kind of cameras to get similar high speed footage costs tens of thousands of pounds, but Dr Bub's invention does so at a fraction of the cost."

Dr Bub explained that the invention lets the camera pixels act as they were parts of tens or even hundreds of individual cameras taking pictures in rapid succession during a single normal exposure. The picture and the video are captured at the same time using the same camera sensor.

The invention is about to be shrunk into an all in one sensor that could fit inside normal cameras by a team from the University of Nottingham, headed by Dr Mark Pitter.

He said: "The use of a custom built solid state sensor will allow us to design compact and simple cameras, microscopes and other optical devices that further reduce the cost and effort needed. This will make it useful for a far wider range of applications, such as consumer cameras, security systems, or manufacturing control".

The technology has been patented by Isis Innovation, Oxford University's technology transfer office that seed funded the development and will license the patent to interested parties.
