A report said that smartphones represented 17.3 percent of all mobile handset sales in the first calendar quarter this year, a rise of 13.6 percent compared to Q1 2009.
And Gartner said Android and Apple were both the clear winners in the quarter. Google Android displaced Windows Mobile and both it and Apple increased market share year on year.
Even though Nokia kept the pole position with its Symbian operating system, Gartner believes the company is still in a weak position in the smartphone market.
In overall mobile sales, Apple achieved number seven with a 112.2 percent year on year. Carolina Milanesi, a research VP at Gartner, said: "The second quarter of 2010 will be a very important one for Apple. We expect that Apple will present its new iPhone in June during its worldwide developer conference.

Overall, worldwide mobile phones including smartphones totalled 314.7 million in calendar quarter one of this year - that's 17 percent up from the same period last year. Milanesi said that sales of white box products in emerging markets - India, that is - drove sales upwards. "We expect sales of white box products to remain very healthy for the remainder of 2010, especially outside China," she said.
Android truly is amazing to be able to displace a mobile os that is not even on the market yet.
