Following Nokia's patent win against Apple where it must pay the former rubber boot maker some dosh per unit of an iOS device sold, industry rumours are beginning to surface about how much money Jobs will have to fork out.
The number doing the rounds is $11 per iOS unit sold. That's including back royalties as well as running royalties from the future.
Our source tells us it's unconfirmed as yet, but it would fit in nicely with rumours about other licensing deals - as well as what is known about some other, unnamed companies' terms and conditions.
According to this pro-Apple WWDC yarn, there have been over 200 million iOS devices sold since 2007. We're no good at maths but if the figures ring true, that's a lot of moolah. Couldn't be - could it?
*EyeSee Back at Mobile World Congress in February, Swingin' Steve Elop confirmed to TechEye that the acquisition Microsoft and Nokia partnership saw patents heavily considered right from the start.
Take Polaroid. In 1991, Kodak was ordered to pay $925m to Polaroid. Ten years later, Polaroid has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy...
Polaroid could have used some of the payment as seed money for moving into the digital age but instead they frittered it away and soon had nothing to show for it.
I'm not saying it will definitely happen with Nokia but in many ways, they are on the slippery slope already.
I'm inclined to agree with you - once the company's been asset stripped by its "partner" anyway.
For a company which has not made any negative quarter since 1995 and has $9 billion net cash + a lot of assets. Look the balance sheet, not what analysts are telling you that you should invest into Apple!
As Nokia said that this MAY have a positive impact for this quarter.
If apple would pay $2.2 billion they would have said something more than "may have a positive impact"
My guess is that apple will pay ~300-400Million for the devices already sold...
When I did my evaluation I came to a different conclusion. If Apple had to pay as much as you are suggesting, Apple would be better off just buying Nokia. Considering that Apple has $66 Billion in cash and Nokia is only worth $22 Billion they could quite easily make the purchase.
So that amount of money doesn't make any sense. Anyway, you can read my evaluation at the usual place. You know where it is. It's already annoyed a lot of people, but I'll dare you to prove me wrong.
