Schools snap up .XXX names -

US schools are so worried that pornographers are going to use their good names to peddle their salacious subject matter that they are becoming good customers of the doman name.

The University of Missouri and Washington University have been snapping up .xxx domain names to avoid links of their names to porn sites.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the move is all part of a defensive plan and names like washu.xxx and mizzou.xxx away are all in the hands of the universities where they will never be seen again.

The new .xxx domain will be launched later this year, and before that, everyone with a trademark has the opportunity to reserve names during what's called a "sunrise phase" aimed at protecting organisations against cyber squatters.

Terry Robb, director of information technology at the University of Missouri-Columbia told the press that he didn't want someone coming across his trademark on a porn site. The university also has registered missouri.xxx and missouritigers.xxx. Missouricougars.xxx is probably still available.

It costs about $200 per domain for universities and others to take control of each of their .xxx sites. However St. Louis College of Pharmacy figured it was money well spent to purchase stlcop.xxx. We could not see it either, unless it was a site for startled coppers.

Chad Shepherd, vice president of information technology for the school, said it was better to be safe than sorry. The last think you want is your good name dragged through the mud over startled copper porn.

Washington University is often known as "Wash. U" and there was an animated female Japanese character named WashuHakubi.  This has apparently spawned cartoons which are heavy on sex and violence and not much to do with 16th Century Culture and Thought courses.
