Opera has released a beta version of Opera 10.60, which it claims is now more than 50 percent faster than its predecessor on selected JavaScript tests.
The company, which released its last beta in March, has also said that this new version also incorporates new web-standard features, such as Geolocation, which detects user's locations and maps them in the middle of the action. The browser is also said to be optimised to deliver opening a new tab in a split-second, loading pages faster on congested networks with Opera Turbo, or navigating webpages with features such as mouse gestures, Speed Dial and unsurpassed tab management.
The browser also has an open video format WebM, built in, which the company claims makes viewing videos online a piece of cake. HTML5 Appcache and Web Workers also let users use different applications, such as word processor, image editors and spreadsheets in the browser, while offline and web developers can now also use HTML5 Web Workers for doing heavy calculations without slowing down the browser.
And there are still the old Opera favourites including Opera Turbo, which is said to boost web browsing in congested areas such as the airport or in internet cafes provides about 65 percent faster browsing on Edge and around 50 percent faster browsing speed on 3G networks.
Opera Unite lets users share content immediately, without having to upload files.
Opera's always lagged behind the main contenders in market share. We'll have to see if this beta picks up on users. According to statistics from W3 the browser only had a 2 percent market share in May this year making it bottom compared to IE (45.7 percent), Firefox (32.2 percent), Chrome (8.4 percent) and Safari (5.3 percent).
How do you mean? If you're referring to market percentage, well, yes, but I hope you're not thinking about technical finesses. Opera is known for originating many features later adapted by other Web browsers.
The fact that some people didn't knew about it or know the history of the browser doesn't make true the phrase: "Opera's always lagged behind the main contenders."
Opera innovated with : Tabs, Speed Dial, Opera Link Synchronization, Turbo, M2 Mail & Feeds, Gadgets,Unite Dragonfly, Voice, mouse gestures, password manager, spell checker, copy to note, PASTE & GO and much more...
This version is beautiful and it has so many features allready built in. I ve tried and pimp them all!..Opera is my favorite!
WTF are you talking about ? Like tanketom said, I hope you are talking about market percentages....
Because Opera IS the most advanced browser
I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would willingly use Safari or Chrome. Compare them to Opera and you'll see that there is absolutely no comparison.
Since then it is better than any other browser ever was.
Opera never lagged behind in my opinion ...
"the lack of tweaking"
This is a common misconception about Opera. If by "tweak", you mean develop 3rd party addons and distribute them for installtion", then it certainly has less of that than others - although Unite does give developers a lot more than they had before.
However, if by "tweaking" you mean "tweaking" - then Opera is far more tweakable out of the box than anything else on the planet - and probably always will be. Try customising a clean Firefox install without a visit to moz.org - it can't be done. Opera is so customisable that they need to hide away most of the options so as not to clutter the interface/confuse people. Seek though, and you will find.
Some of the biggest tech disasters have sold well (Xbox, iPhone), purely because of marketing budgets.
Just because something does not have marketshare, does not make it a bad product. My Ferrari Enzo is far better than your Ford Focus.....
Opera is easilly the best browser on the market. It's got all the killer features of Firefox, without the security problems, it's got the performance of Chrome (and then some), without the privacy problems.
What was disastrous about 10.50? It was awesome on my machine. I think the Firefox fanboys got upset as it killed their browser in every respect, and that was the spin they used (Betanews were prime culprits in this respect).
10.60 is REALLY good.
It's also worth pointing out how biased those webstats are to the US market (where Opera has it's lowest marketshare). Globally Opera is ahead of Safari in usage, and just behind Chrome.
110m Opera users can't be wrong.
