Julian Assange tenuously related to Taiwanese pirates -

Say what you want about Julian Assange, love him or loathe him, his recent unauthorised autobiography from Canongate makes a startling accouncement that has all of Taiwan in a tizzy.

The name Assange comes from one of the ethnically-Chinese ancestors of his stepfather - and this ancestor's nickname was Ah Sang.

Bradley Winterton, longtime British book reviewer for the Taipei Times, writes in a recent review of 'Julian Assange: The unauthorised autobiography'': "There is one fact of local interest close to the start - the name Assange, taken from the author’s stepfather, derives from the Chinese Ah Sang, the stepfather’s ancestor several generations back, who was "a Taiwanese pirate."
