A US state department spokesman PJ Crowley has been forced to quit after calling the treatment of the man accused of leaking secret cables to Wikileaks "stupid".
Crowley said that he was taking responsibility for the impact of his remarks about Bradley Manning, which has made the US Army look like a bunch of petty morons who like torturing people for making them look stupid.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she accepted Crowley's resignation "with regret". Crowley had served his nation "with distinction", and was "motivated by a deep devotion to public policy and public diplomacy".
This deep devotion to doing the right thing was probably behind his dubbing the way Manning was being treated as being "stupid".
Crowley was speaking to an audience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology about new media and foreign policy when a questioner asked about "torturing a prisoner in a military brig".
He said that he spent 26 years in the air force and felt what was happening to Manning is ridiculous, counterproductive and stupid, "and I don't know why the Department of Defense is doing it".
Nevertheless, he said "Manning is in the right place". He added that the comments were on the record but later said they were his own opinion.
In his resignation letter he said: "Given the impact of my remarks, for which I take full responsibility, I have submitted my resignation."
President Barack Obama insisted he had received assurances that the terms of Pte Manning's confinement were "appropriate". So in otherwords the US Army is perfectly justified in acting like the Footballers in "Revenge of the Nerds" and the way to find out if someone is being bullied is to ask the bullies.
Amnesty International has expressed concern about the conditions in which Manning was being held, which puts the US right up there with Libya . But who cares what a bunch of liberals think eh?
In the US there is a lack of concern about Manning who is seen as a traitor even before his trial. One does not embarrass the US government by telling the world what it is actually doing rather than what it says it is doing.
Crowley quits over handling of Bradley Manning
Too much “Do what you wilt” at the State Department

Generally there is a lack of concern in the US about Manning who is seen as a traitor even before his trial. One does not embarrass the US government by telling the world what it is actually doing rather than what it says it is doing.
As an American, this is how I see it: He has endangered the lives of hundreds of people working in sensitive areas. He has strained various diplomatic ties. Yes, there is some monkey business displayed, but it wasn't worth the cost of discovery.
What real wrongdoing was discovered to the point where people actually lost their jobs or government agencies were shut down, or political advantage was gained? Nothing. Most of it was simply to embarrass the U.S. government. I realize that amuses most of you in Euroland, but it's petty and accomplishes nothing.
The government's job now is to insure he pays the cost and make an example out of him so that another person might think twice about doing something this stupid.
You and the rest of the moronic left (useful fools, indeed!), have no idea what treatment Manning is receiving. And neither did PJ Crowley, who is just another stupid leftist and should have been outright fired for his comments. Let some leftist "think" tank offer him employment; he has no business being in U.S. government.
Besides, how many people have the english government wrongly imprisoned, tortured and executed over the years? You might want to clean your own house first, mate.
Mr. President,
Please properly investigate the possible/probable inhumane treatment of PFC Bradley E. Manning, being detained in the United States Marine Corps Quantico Brig in Virginia.
Common sense tells the conscience that possible/probable inhumane treatment must be fully investigated.
Facts of the case, as reported by David Coombs, PFC Manning's defense lawyer, indicate that:
Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell has stated that PFC Manning has been a model detainee.
Brig forensic psychiatrists have continually stated that there's no mental health justifications for the extreme conditions of PFC Manning's detainment.
Quantico Commander Colonel Daniel Choike has denied a fair request by PFC Manning to be removed from the medically unnecessary extreme current conditions of his detainment.
Chief Warrant Officer Denise Barnes used a sarcastic remark made by PFC Manning, (referring to the waistband in his shorts), as an unfair convenient excuse to unjustifiably further increase the extreme conditions of PFC Manning's detainment, with no contact of, nor recommendations from, the mental health staff to do so.
The Brig (excluding mental health staff as they don't recommend the extreme current conditions) is using loopholes in policies to unfairly increase the extreme conditions of PFC Manning's detainment.
These extreme conditions, inconsistencies between policies, and possible/probable abuse of authority, must be investigated.
The communication and exercise and sleep of PFC Manning is being severely restricted to the viable concern of inhumaneness.
Hence, to now rely on the sole assurance of those allegedly behind this alleged mistreatment, does nothing to justly bring the truth to light.
Our country's principles of conscientiousness, deserve to have a serious matter such as this be fully investigated by unbiased independent third parties.
Again, please properly investigate the possible/probable inhumane treatment of PFC Bradley Manning.
Anything less falls short of truth and justness, and hence the American way, as your words so often convey.
Sincerely,
Sally Kline
