Samsung has started shipping its tiny Spinpoint MT2 1 terabyte 2.5" mobile hard disk drive, aimed at portable storage as well as digital TVs, home media systems and set-top boxes.
The company says the MT2 has 333GB per-platter technology built in and runs at 5400rpm. It has a 12.5mm form factor and runs with Samsung's SilentSeek and NoiseGuard to keep the drive quiet - which is why it is suggesting it'd be a good HD for set top boxes. It's the highest capacity drive Samsung has offered for portable digital kit, it says.
Samsung has compared the Spinpoint MT2 to competiting drives and claims that it can offer about 20 percent better read/write performance and four percent lower power consumption. It's got shock resistance levels of 400G when it's running and 800G when the juice is turned off. It's halogen-free so complies with the EU's crackdown on using harmful stuff in tech kit.
The MT2 sports 8MB buffer memory, a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface and Native Command Queuing. It's available in two flavours - 750GB and 1TB and is available now through the Samsung website, here.
