LG Display has introduced a 5-inch full HD LCD panel for smartphones which it claims has the highest resolution ever stuck on a mobile panel.
According to Computerworld, the widescreen panel is based on Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching technology and has a 440 pixels per inch screen
Apple's Retina display has 264 ppi on the new iPad and 326 ppi on the iPhone 4S.
The fact that it has a 16-by-9 aspect ratio, is half an inch larger, and 2.2 times denser in pixels means that it is much better than anything Apple has come up with.
LG said the panel is expected to be released during the second half of this year, according to LG Display, which didn't elaborate on when devices that use the product will start shipping.
It is expected to show off the screen at the SID 2012 Display Week show in Boston starting on June 4.
It looks like LG thinks that a 5-inch panel size is something that the great unwashed want. Apparently they no longer need to get their smartphones in their pockets.
Earlier this year, LG Electronics launched the Optimus Vu, which also has a 5-inch display. However, the panel had a more disappointing 4-by-3 aspect ratio and a 1024-by-768 pixel resolution.
Apple: We've created a screen with pixels so small you can't distinguish them.
LG: Well we've created one with much smaller pixels so it must be loads better.
If you can't distinguish the pixels in either case then the only thing that having more of them does is slow the GPU down. Any extra resolution is invisible.
