AdMob reckons iPhone OS more popular than Android -

The number of people with iPhones is larger than those who have an Android handset according to a report by AdMob.

In its Mobile Metrics Report, which looked at the Android and iPhone market, the company found that in the US there was a 2 to 1 ratio of iPhone OS devices to Android OS devices. Worldwide the ratio of iPhone OS devices to Android devices was 3.5 to 1.

North America had the majority of the unique Android device share with 75 percent - this was followed by Asia (12 percent) and Western Europe (11 percent). The majority of unique iPhone OS devices were located in North America (49 percent) and Western Europe (28 percent).

The company said these made up 11.6 million unique Android OS devices and 40.8 million unique iPhone OS devices worldwide in April 2010. It split this into countries where it found  there were 8.7 million unique Android OS devices and 10.7 million unique iPhones in the United States in April 2010. When non-phone devices running the iPhone OS – the iPod touch and iPad – are included this number the figure  jumped to 18.3 million in the US. The company also found that there were 11.6 million unique Android OS devices and 27.4 million unique iPhones worldwide in April 2010. When non-phone devices running the iPhone OS – the iPod touch and iPad – were included the number of unique devices rose to 40.8 million worldwide.


The top five countries with the most unique iPhone OS devices in April 2010 were the United States (44 percent), United Kingdom (9 percent), France (6 percent), Canada (5 percent) and Japan (4 percent). Over the past 12 months, the iPhone platform has grown faster internationally than in North America. The iPhone OS experienced its strongest growth in the past year in Asia (474 percent), and Western Europe (269 percent).

The report also found that 75 percent of unique Android devices were located in North America in April 2010, followed by Asia (12 percent) and Western Europe (11  percent). The United States was the leading country (75percent) in unique devices on the Android platform, followed by China (8 percent), the UK (3 percent), France (2 percent) and Germany (2 percent).

China had the second greatest number of unique Android devices in the AdMob network. The top three Android devices in China were the HTC Hero, HTC Magic and HTC Dream. There were more Android devices than iPhones in China in April 2010.
