A VP from Synopsys said today that by the middle of this century, computing power will exceed the thinking capacity of all the humans beings on the planet.
Rich Goldman made some compelling comparisons between the development of the microprocessor and space exploration, and showed how computing power had assisted the ability for everyone to go boldly forwards.
By 2050, Goldman said, computing power would have the capability to match the thinking power of all the human beings there are in the world, while right now it only represents one percent of the power of a human brain.
These slides from his presentation sum up the thread of his argument and show what we can continue to expect in the future, provided we don’t all blow ourselves up or we’re all laid waste by global warming.
For example, Goldman said, a 1982 Intel 80286 was 28 times more powerful than computers on the Voyagers 1 and 2, launched in 1977. Sputnik computers were capable of only 2,000 instructions per second. And a 2010 Apple iPad is 689 times more powerful than the onboard computers on the Columbia space shuttle, first launched in 1981.
The Hubble telescope was launched in 1990 and the first CCD based commercial digital camera arrived in 1991. “CCDs are a big reason for later developments in astronomy,” said Goldman. They’ve made extremely powerful telescopes at a fraction of the cost.
Who is Hudson?
A proper scientist acknowledges prior work and doesn't claim it for himself. If he were to issue the lame claim that he was not aware of Kurzweil's work, that also would reflect on his job performance as he would be saying he ignored reviewing the relevant literature on the subject. There's no way Goldman could have missed Kurzweil's work as it was widely distributed and received much attention.
Either Rich Goldman is a plagiarist or Mike Magee did a very poor job of summarizing his presintation.
Much like those who will react when, say, the word, “Idiot”, is shouted out, those who react to the above are akin to those who are born blind arguing about what colours are and should be. The situation is not possible and one’s ignorance, illusion and delusion counts for nowt in the matter.
To viewpoint about the mind [minds in reality] and the power of the brain and so forth is like The Egg talking about The Chicken. It is merely some clubbing together to offer the illusion-cum-delusion that just because they are applying effort like debating, interrogating and investigating, they are onto something. Not when you are blind in the first instance.
Should the titled report be true, and it is true for many in their own imagination, hopes and wishes, it should be clear that what the material is able to perceive is limited by the material itself. For example, one’s thoughts, be they from one’s past or the future, is [seemingly] impenetrable by others [and the first to prove so will be dead very soon thereafter]. This is because thoughts are not of the material/electromagnetic dimension but through the portal of the brain of the individual thinking those thoughts, they become tangible and manipulable. This simplicity eludes the mostest and greatest even up to the present day. Would it be a moment for laughter or compassion when, say, a chimp were to pontificate about the importance of bananas to humanity?
When it comes to humanity, those whose horizon is above another have the better perception and insight in affairs material but when it comes to the spiritual, not only is spirituality invisible to almost all, it is also mythical. Now, should the other be empowered of the spiritual, would he reveal so when he knows full well that others lack this ability? Another simplicity which eludes. And that is just what The Bookie, the ONLY One who benefits from Disagreement, wants. He wants Divinity to engage in the tournament with one hand and one feet tied but that is not a problem because Divinity is within all humans whereas The Bookie resides without humans. Another simplicity which eludes. It is only when we [start to] think that The Bookie gets to have a dip in the cookie jar. Opportunities like, “The creation of humans will overwhelm humans”. Stupid-cum-dumb humans, why of course, but not those who are able to connect with Intelligence and realise the score and above all, where and how the cookie crumbles. Especially the improperly baked ones, be they over or under baked.
After reading the comments here, I went back and looked at the presentation, and am aghast to find that the attribution to Mr. Kurzweil is not included in this version of the presentation.
To rectify this, I intend to
-send a copy of the presentation to Mr. Kurzweil, noting what occurred and apologizing to him.
- A note to the forum organizer with the proper attribution, so that it can be distributed to the attendees.
- Will assure that the proper attribution is included in all further presentations of this material.
