Intel's flawed Sandy Bridge chipsets could have a domino effect on other companies in partnership with the manufacturer.
It is thought that AMD and Nvidia's discrete graphics units will suffer their own share of financial losses due to the flaws filtering through to them.
Intel took its 6 Series Chipset off the market last month due to a design defect, which causes degradation of SATA 3.0 Gbps ports over time. At the time this prompted virtually every maker of motherboard and notebooks in partnership to recall sold products, in addition to stopping sales of leftovers.
Although Intel said earlier this week it would resume shipments of chipsets for PC configurations unaffected by the flaw, after discussing the problem with PC manufacturers, the Sandy Bridge effect is taking hold elsewhere.
According to Softpedia, Nvidia and AMD's discrete graphics units will both suffer from financial losses. Although Sandy Bridge processors pack integrated graphics, they are well-equipped for web browsing or multimedia. Graphically intensive processes need a strong GPU to keep them ticking over. That means a fair few Sandy Bridge machines were given Radeon or GeForce branded cards to complement the chipset.
Nvidia told TechEye it is unable to comment because of its partnership with Intel. We're waiting to see if the corporate team will come through but we are not holding our breath.
AMD was also unable to comment at time of publication, telling us only that it is preparing a statement - whether it will be "everything is OK!" spin, an acknowledgement or whatever else remains to be seen.
