While the world holds its breath waiting for the new Radeon HD 7000 graphics cards, the dark satanic rumour mill has manufactured a hell on earth yarn claiming that they will just be rebrands.
We had been waiting for the HD 7000s to tip up either in time for Christmas or early next year. Some had even been thinking of putting off buying a new card and waiting for the new range to be released. While these were AMD fans, it had been hoped that the range would bring forth something a little more sexy than is available now.
However, according to Legit Reviews the Radeon HD 7000 series will just be rebranded HD 6350, 6450, 6570 and 6670. All AMD seems to have done is replace the 6 at the beginning with a 7 and will push them out to an expectant audience.
Legit Reviews cites "reliable sources" and it does not mean HP which is rather reliable on sausages.
Apparently there are two possibilities for Radeon HD 7700 series. First is that the series is based on Juniper and the the second is that these make use of rechristened GPUs from a slightly higher market position than the previous generation. This would mean AMD is dusting off Barts or may release a crippled Cayman.
So if the HD7000 is not going to be a next-generation GPU, punters will have to wait for codename "Tahiti" which will not look anything like the Radeon HD 7000 series. Punters might as well upgrade on what's available now.
Do nVidia's marketing people have that much free time that they can start rumors blaming AMD of doing the same thing that nVidia has been doing for nigh a decade now?
