Digitimes reports that the brand formerly known as ATI before it was suckered up into AMD has delayed the launch of its Radeon HD 6000 GPUs from October to November.
The move doesn't mean the series will move to 28nm, but will still be a slightly revamped HD 5000 made in 40nm, meaning its specs probably won't touch the performance of green goblin Nvidia's Fermi marchitecture.
AMD, then still ATI, showed off its HD 6000 back in July, garnering criticism it's simply an improved HD 5000. Fudo of Fudzilla wrote the HD 6000 was "an evolution rather than a revolution."
Nonetheless, the HD 6000 will perform better than the HD 5000, although it can be expected Fermi will beat it in DirectX11 and tesselation performance.
Both Fudo and Digitimes point out Nvidia will be happy, as it will be able to garner back some market share. In this year's second quarter, Nvidia's market share crumbled from 29.2 percent to 19.7 percent quarter-over-quarter claimed Jon Peddie Research.
AMD by comparison managed to garner 24.4 percent of the market, rising from 18.4 percent in 2009. Nvidia blamed the late roll-out of Fermi for its demise, but if things go well and the current generation of cards keep on getting price slashes, then the company will be able to make inroads again.
Are you joking? The ATI Evergreen series, available for a year, can already hold its own against the best Fermi's; and at lower power to boot. The 40nm Northern Islands generation is going to absolutely wipe the floor with Fermi.
Writing articles about things you know nothing of... did you learn your trade from Nick Farrell ?
"Update: Minutes after posting the story we were informed by some people in the know that the launch will indeed go ahead as planned. We can expect some fresh and tasty Radeons in two weeks, but mass availability should probably be expected sometime in November. As for Nvidia's price cuts, well it's not like they have much choice."
Definitely biased and laced with incorrect assumptions and positions.
But hey, if you think Fermi is anything but "hot, slow, late and unmanufacturable", then you must be on crack.
Oh, and please learn how to use spell check. Dumbass.
Since when nVidia has the best performance card? Did they launched GTX580 and I'm not aware of it?
The GTX480 can barely hold its own against HD5870 and gets smoked by its true competitor, the HD5970.
I assume that you are talking about the GTX460, that's really better than equally priced offering by AMD, the 5770. But it's made to make nVidia look less bad in the market, and sold at loss.
AMD should lower it's price, but it seems they can't, since the graphic division is the only one to keep the company afloat. Bulldozer and Bobcat better be good!
Rumors nowadays do speak of 4D shaders rather than 5D, which is a hugely significant change (that Fudzilla article you quoted is an old one, they seem to have changed their mind: http://www.fudzilla.com/graphics/item/20315-radeon-hd-6700-detailed-on-slides Of course, Fudzilla is a very questionable source in the first place...). However, it may indeed be true that some parts are recycled, as slides speak of Cypress memory bus for Barts, if I remember correctly.
Anyway, seeing as Evergreen seemingly stresses nVidia, Northern Islands may be quite a cause for worry. However, I trust nVidia to be resilient, as ATI had to be for a long while. nVidia made a significant step forward going from GF100 to GF104, seeming to have learnt from their mistakes. Surely they will do so all the more when designing their next architecture.
And the same goes for AMD, which is why the claim that they will lag in tessellation performance is... Well, let's just say, not to be expected from a tech site. AMD has more experience with tessellation engines, and seeing it taking off at last (with nVidia finally deciding to join in, and doing so big time) will definitely not have them just leave it untouched for their next generation.
I'm sure you read the update on that delay story too? To quote: "Minutes after posting the story we were informed by some people in the know that the launch will indeed go ahead as planned."
I guess all is still rumours so far.
The 480 gives a good 15% better performance over the 5870 in all the reviews i have read and if i were to buy a gpu now it would be the one i would go for.The 2gb eyefinity 5870 is more attractive to me than the standard version due to its 2gb of memory but it`s the same price as the 480 so gets automatically ruled out by me for that reason.Any dual gpu, no matter who makes it is simply not a consideration for me at all due to the endless problems i keep hearing about from friends who do nothing but complain about support and problems with them.
However i am waiting to see what the 6000 series and nvidias follow up does before i spend anything and i may just wait untill 2011 for kepler etc before i spend my money, depending on the results from these companies refreshes.
Oh and couldn`t give a flying f*** about ati/amd OR nvidia, all i want is the best bang for my buck. You should try it sometime as it works a lot better than blindly having some childish loyalty to a single brand.
ATI IS THE NEW KING THIS IS A PROVEN FACT NOTHING BEATS THE HD 5870X2 AND THE HD 5970
