  Sounds like Plan B in the case the net neutrality movement fails (or the republicans get back in power, whatever comes first), without net neutrality the only choice for google is to provide network access themselves.
  
  Frankly I don't blame them, and I much rather have google as a provider than ATT/Verizon/Comcast any day.

  WASHINGTON – Google plans to build experimental, ultra-fast Internet networks in a handful of communities around the country.
  
  The search company said Wednesday that its fiber-optic broadband networks will deliver speeds of 1 gigabit per second to as many as 500,000 Americans. Google Inc. says those systems will be more than 100 times faster than the networks that most Americans have access to today.
  
  In a blog post, the company said the networks will let consumers download a high-definition, full-length feature film in less than five minutes and allow rural health clinics to send 3-D medical images over the Web.
  
  Google says it will seek input from communities that might be interested in getting one of the testbed networks.

  So building and selling a high speed fiber optic network to local isps is evil? If Google can do it better, let them do it. The telcos will finally have competition. I'm sick of paying 480 bucks a year for broadband internet access.

  How can giving the U.S. what a lot of the rest of the world already has -- really fast Internet connections and infrastructure - be bad? I mean, REALLY! This country is so far behind the times. In Europe, it's not uncommon to have a choice of 15 or more Internet service providers to choose from, and Internet speeds in places like Korea are faster than in the U.S.

  And this just in from another web site: "The U.S. ranked 19th in a September 2008 study of average broadband speeds, behind Japan, Iceland and Austria, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Wireless networks in the U.S. are also being strained by the growing use of smartphones such as Apple Inc.’s iPhone."
