Citrix buys up social collaboration cloud platform Podio -

Cloud provider Citrix has announced the acquisition of Podio to enable social collaboration in the workplace.

The deal means that Citrix will be able to access software firm Podio’s app platform aimed at enabling online social collaboration between professionals.

The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, but the deal will see Citrix acquire Podio, which has offices in Copenhagen and San Francisco, employing 27 staff.

For Citrix the deal will add a social element to its existing web video and audio offerings and GoTo services.

With an increasingly mobile workforce and the advent of bring your own device schemes, Citrix reckons that the social element of Podio will encourage greater engagement in the workplace.

This will mean instead of employees skiving on Facebook or Twitter, they can use the Podio platform to post status updates, add links, comment, give feedback or presumably share mildly humorous cat-based YouTube clips.

But as well as messing around ‘poking’ the new recruit in HR, the platform will actually encourage a bit of graft.

Podio CEO Tommy Ahlers said in a web announcement today this will involve people “actually doing real work” as well as talking about it in a social work setting, and is aimed at small to medium business improving productivity through collaboration.

To this end an app store from Podio gives access to Google Apps, Google Docs, Dropbox and a host of other useful work tools.

Podio also has an app market of over 600 apps, with over a million uses so far.  As well as access to these free apps, users will also be able to create their own.

Citrix hopes that these apps will continue to be “created for users by users”, rather than just staff with strong technical skills, with a big emphasis on simplicity.

“They have to be incredibly simple to use but also built for business,” Citrix said today.

By bringing this all together in one area there are many possible applications, such as managing projects between groups of employees with from different parts of the world.
